Brisbane is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland and in 2009 was rated (by the Economist magazine) as the sixteenth most livable city in the entire world. This hilly city is dotted by spurs of the Herbert Taylor Mountain Range and divided by the Brisbane River making for interesting landscapes. The central business district reflects the British links with streets named after the royal family. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to live in this charming city but a stay in one of the luxury hotels Brisbane offers can be nearly as good. The facilities and services on offer will leave you feeling refreshed and as laid back as the local Brisbanites.
There are a good selection of shopping malls to choose from: Brisbane Arcade, Queen Street Mall, Wintergarden, Queens Plaza, Broadway on the Mall, The Myers Center, Queen Adelaide Building and Tattersall's Arcade, to name a few.
In 2007 Brisbane was nominated for the International Music Hotspot by Billboard magazine and came within the first five. Fortitude Valley and the City have popular pubs and clubs offering entertainment.
There are several events that are held every year (or every two years) in Brisbane and are worth checking out if you are visiting at that time: the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) held in August, the Riverfestival held in September, the Warana (Blue Skies) festival celebrates the city and people of Brisbane held every second year in September, the International Film Festival is held at various locations in the city July and August, the Greek Paniyiri festival held first weekend in May, Medieval Fayre and Tournament held in June, Valley Fiesta, three days of live music, markets and entertainment, a lot of which is free held in September and finally the Bridge to Brisbane fun run raises money for charity and has become a major event. In 2010, 40000+ people took part and more than half a million dollars was raised.
Australia has many animals which are not found anywhere else in the world. While staying at the luxury hotels Brisbane has to offer, there a couple of places where you can meet one of these, the Koala. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary allows you can hold and take close up photos of these cuddly creatures. You also have the opportunity to hand feed kangaroos. There are other native animals here many of which you can handle or feed. Alma Park Zoo opens the koala enclosure every afternoon and you can take plenty of photos. This zoo has animals from around the world.
As you can imagine, the climate in Brisbane encourages everyone to enjoy the great outdoors and there are plenty of open spaces dedicated to enjoyment. New Farm Park has playgrounds and picnic areas. Mount Coot-tha Reserve has walking trails and picnic spots set amongst the bush and parkland. There is a stunning view of the city from the lookout at the top of the mountain. The lookout has wheelchair access. On the banks of the river is South Banks Parklands with tropical gardens, restaurants, cafes, picnic area and room for cyclists, skateboarders and in-line skaters. City Botanic Gardens is spacious and has the Mangrove Boardwalk which is lit until midnight which allows for a relaxing evening stroll and a view of the river at night.
Brisbane has its fair share of museums and places of interest to visit. The oldest residence in the area is Newstead House, built in 1846 and this is now a museum. The Old Windmill and Observatory was built by convicts in 1828. The Brisbane Museum shows the history, partly by using multimedia clips of the town and people. Free tours are available on some days. The Institute of Modern Art is a free gallery. Both the Footsteps Gallery and the Fireworks Gallery are dedicated to indigenous art.
Brisbane City Hall was closed in 2009 for major repairs but can still be admired from the outside. The hall was opened in 1930 and for decades was the tallest and most expensive building around. Saint John's Cathedral is an example of the revival of Gothic architecture that occurred in the nineteenth century. Inside are 400 hand-stitched cushions showing the flowers and animals of Queensland.
The reception at the luxury hotels Brisbane offers will be able to give advice on local events and places of interest.
